Truefitt & Hill

At the recent Concours of Elegance held at Hampton Court Palace, we had the pleasure of being introduced to the wonderful Truefitt & Hill. With a heritage that dates back to 1805, they are recognised by the Guinness book of World Records as being the oldest barbers in the world. As well as offering excellent grooming services (we highly recommend the beard trim), they have an extensive collection of fragrances, shampoos, combs and shaving requisites.

What we found particularly interesting was the two new hair preparations that they presented: C.A.R. lotion and C.A.R. cream. They were originally developed in the early 1900s for members of the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall. The stylish gentleman of the club were complaining that driving the new “drop-head” motor vehicles - or convertibles, as we now know them - was exposing them to the elements and causing their hair to become unruly. The innovative chaps at Truefitt & Hill created a special lotion and cream that would help maintain their immaculate appearance. The name was in homage to the motoring pioneers at the RAC, and the re-issue is faithful to the original formula with a slight nod to modernity. Enhanced with plant extracts including the delicate fragrance of lily of the valley, these creams promise to hydrate, condition, give body and add lustre to hair without weighing it down. In the spirit of the original, it will maintain a sleek appearance in even the most windswept conditions. We have already ordered a company supply in anticipation of next year’s Goodwood Revival*!

C.A.R. cream and lotion are available to purchase online from the Truefitt & Hill but if you are in the St James area, we would recommend paying a visit to the barbers to see the full range. Their classic range of traditional toiletries offers something for everyone and their West Indian Limes is considered the best of its kind. Refreshing and uplifting, it is an ideal fragrance for travel to warmer climes and is a perfect scent for shaving creams, soaps and shower gels as it is not so over-powering that it cant be layered with other scents. An ideal Christmas stocking-filler to put in a Caracalla wash bag.
